The ways in which we transfer data between devices, be they computers or smartphones have seen many innovations over the years, but the latest iteration in data transfer technology must be the most bizarre of all. Now you can do it with your thumb.
The application that allows you to do this is called “Sparsh” and in order to transfer information you simply need to touch the screen. In fact the experience is like picking up data on one machine and putting it in the other just using a thumb.
Transferring information, images, data, videos etc. from one device to another is always fraught with problems and difficulties; there always seems to be so many things that go wrong and it can be very frustrating especially when you are in a hurry, but with Sparsh it seems that you are just using your body.
Say you wish to transfer a picture from your mobile phone to your laptop. You simply display the image on your phone, then you walk across to your computer and touch it, and the image is transferred.
It works the other way round too. Say you have looked up the phone number of a local restaurant using your computer and you intend to phone it using your handset. Before Sparsh you would most likely manually input the phone number to your phone and hit dial, and when doing this there is always room for error. However with Sparsh you simply touch the number on your computer, and then touch the keypad on your phone and the number will be dialled automatically; Sparsh will recognise that you want to dial the number and will do so for you without any further involvement on your part.
As impressive as this is, the way it works is quite simple. When you touch the phone number it is stored in a temporary file in a Dropbox; when you touch your phone keypad the phone number is retrieved. It works in a similar manner for any other data too.
Sparsh is available as an application for Android phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S and the Sony Xperia though it is likely to be incorporated into the Android OS in the near future. Find out more about these exciting developments at the Dialaphone blog.
