Perhaps the most impressive of Apple’s technical developments on the iPhone 4 is the beautiful new display.

The specs read like a dream and Apple’s own website is rightfully quick to promote them. The 960 by 640 LCD screen means that individual pixels aren’t visible to the naked eye, and it qualifies as an HD unit.

This is quite remarkable for such a small display, and it really inflates the boasts that the iPhone is a true multimedia device. It has to be admitted that video playback for any real length of time is of questionable worth on a mobile device the size of a phone, but by developing the screen to this point, as well as improving the phone’s processor power, Apple have forced users to reconsider.

Even beyond the technical fluff, iPhone 4 owners will know that it translates into a crystal clear display. It’s the kind of leap in quality that you may not be sure of the difference it actually makes until you experience it for yourself. Even text messaging is crisper and more enjoyable.

What’s more, the screen connects ably with the new 5mp camera to really bring the iPhone up to speed with its competitors. Apple have finally made it possible for
owners to film video and to view pictures in the best possible quality.

That Apple has managed to do all of this while maintaining the excellence of the touch sensitivity is all the more impressive. Indeed, the touchscreen has improved, if anything, and the glass used is apparently less susceptible to cracking like its predecessors, although that remains to be seen.

While the contrast could, admittedly, be a little better, the iPhone 4’s new display is by far the best on the market, and really the jewel in this handset’s formidable crown.
