There’s little doubt that the app store is what sets the i Phone apart from its competitors who, by comparison, are still catching up in terms of third-party development. But with so many available, which are really worth it? Here are five of the best.
1. WunderRadio by Weather Underground – £3.99
Making DAB sets almost obsolete, WunderRadio lets you listen to any and all radio stations that broadcast digitally or online. The sound is crystal clear and streaming is smooth in 3G areas. A warning about battery life, though, WunderRadio drains it.
2. Umbrella Today? by Thoughtbot – £1.19
The only question that a weather forecast needs to answer and this app does it succinctly and accurately. Getting caught in a 5pm downpour because you’ve been out since 8am never has to happen again.
3. Oh, the Huge Manatee! by Littlegrey Media – £0.59
We all know about the unprecedented success of Angry Birds, recently acquired by EA, but this game replicates the zany simplicity that seems to be the recipe for success. It uses the iPhone’s accelerometer to guide a stick man around a variety of deadly sea creatures.
4. vouchercloud by Invitation Digital – Free
A must for anyone on a budget, vouchercloud sources deals with local merchants and national chains, and organises them by category and proximity. No unnecessary printing is required, and you’ll never pay full price when you don’t have to again.
5. Jamie’s 20 Minute Meals by Zolmo – £4.99
A little expensive, but easily the best of the iPhone’s recipe apps. Jamie’s recipes are simple and inexpensive, and while 20 minutes is a little generous, none take more than half an hour, perfect for busy evenings. What really pushes it over the edge is that it is regularly updated with new dishes, ensuring you never get bored.
